FDA Warns Marijuana Industry

The Food and Drug Administration is warning the medical marijuana industry not to advertise products as cancer treatment options. Four medical marijuana companies were sent warning letters advising that commercial online product retailers can’t use marketing materials that claim marijuana products can treat cancer, according to the Chicago Tribune.

The commissioner of the FDA, Scott Gottlieb, released a statement saying that “We don’t let companies market products that deliberately prey on sick people with baseless claims that their substance can shrink or cure cancer, and we’re not going to look the other way on enforcing these principles when it comes to marijuana-containing products.”

Greenroads Health, Natural Alchemist, That’s Natural, and The Stanley Brothers were the four companies that were sent warning letters by the FDA. The Stanley Brothers are the makers of Charlotte’s Web and run their family company, CW Hemp. Charlotte’s Web was developed as a treatment for epilepsy, Dravet syndrome, and seizures. GW Pharmaceuticals is also studying CBD’s effectiveness as a treatment for epilepsy.
